Mark Gibson is a senior scientist at Clancy Environmental Consultants Inc. and works in Alexandria, VA. He has over 15 years of experience in environmental science and policy analysis in support of federal and state government programs and the private sector. Prior to joining CEC, Mr. Gibson was employed at ICF International in Fairfax, VA where he managed and supported several research and regulatory support activities for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). He was a senior study director at the Water Science and Technology Board of the National Research Council (NRC) and directed several multiyear studies conducted by blue-ribbon panels of national and international experts on issues related to water resources and policy, and water quality contamination (microbial and chemical), monitoring, and improvement at the local, regional, and national scale. He also worked previously as a consultant in Washington, DC in the fields of toxicology, epidemiology, and risk assessment in support of private clients.
Mr. Gibson specializes in research, regulations, policies, and decision-making related to water quality and the protection of human populations from contaminated drinking water and ambient waters. More broadly, he provides extensive writing and editorial support for the production of a wide variety of technical and non-technical written communications for disparate audiences. Mr. Gibson served and continues to serve as the lead writer and editor for a variety of reports, white papers, and other documents for use by the USEPA's Office of Water and Office of Research and Development in support of the development of new or revised recreational water quality criteria. He also served as the technical lead and supervisory editor for the critical review and summarization of materials (e.g., journal articles, conference presentations) of over 20 USEPA Science to Achieve Results (STAR) grants on drinking water research for the USEPA's National Center for Environmental Research.
