Randi McCuin is a senior microbiologist at Clancy Environmental Consultants, Inc. Ms. McCuin has over 25 years experience in chemical and microbiological testing of environmental matrices, including drinking water, wastewater, soils, and air. She has extensive experience in development and validation of methods for detection of protozoa in the environment, including Cryptosporidium, Giardia, and Microsporidia. She has trained dozens of scientists from around the world in protozoan detection methods. Specialized skills include the microscopic particulate analysis (MPA), identification of algae, and determination of infectious Cryptosporidium in water using cell culture techniques. Other microbiological skills include enumerative methods for bacteria using selective, differential, and/or general media.

Ms. McCuin has excellent microscopy skills in brightfield, epifluorescence, and differential interference contrast (DIC) microscopy. She has instructed nursing students in general microbiology laboratory skills, including aseptic technique, bacterial identification using rapid ID kits, and conventional biochemical tests. Ms. McCuin is the quality assurance manager for the laboratory, maintaining microbiological certifications for state and federal regulatory agencies, representing the laboratory in external audits, and developing and implementing standard operating procedures (SOPs). In addition, she is responsible for the validation, maintenance, and calibration of all laboratory equipment. She has assisted other microbiological laboratories in troubleshooting protozoan methods.

Ms. McCuin has authored and coauthored several peer-reviewed publications on Cryptosporidium and Giardia methods development and validation.
